“‘Assisted dying to send ‘shockwaves’ through life insurance industry”

An independent (financial adviser’s) view

A very serious subject and one about which many to whom I’ve spoken have deeply personal and emotional views. One point of view which I hadn’t, I must admit, considered is that of the life insurers and to what extent life insurance should be included as part of the legal framework which will surround this, assuming it comes into law. If a policy will pay out on death, is this a possible ‘incentive’ to make things happen sooner rather than later? Will future policies need specific exclusions or clauses to cover it? What about existing policies? Most exclude suicide for the first twelve months a plan is in force but had not, of course, envisaged this sort of development in the law. And many policies now include a ‘terminal illness’ benefit, which allows the benefits to be paid with medical confirmation that life expectancy is a year or less. So there will be some thinking to be done about both this, and, I guess, potential implications for Inheritance Tax and pensions, where, for instance, death before age 75 makes a difference.
