But the differences are by no means irreconcilable. All caused by some supposed friends who spread rumours that our European spouse was profligate, allowing all sorts of foreign robbers into the house and that ditching her would save us a fortune. Now we’ve realised that those foreigners were just fixing the gutters and washing the car; that although she was costing us a fortune she was actually contributing just as much to the household; and that those friends were lying gits, stirring things for their own benefit. So surely it would be OK to kiss and make up?

Why did she/they (in the old sense) think that tinkering around with IHT and CGT would be enough to sort out the NHS; and the potholes; and…and the list goes on. My guess is  that they asked the Treasury for a list of anything not involving income tax that they could get away with lightly, although they should already have learned from the winter fuel stuff that all publicity is not good publicity.
