It amazes me that we see it as some kind of victory when China takes over yet another part of our economy. Bit by bit, they and certain middle-eastern states are buying up prime property, infrastructure, once-major industries and utilities and no-one, least of all our government, seems bothered. They act like a weary father in a Jane Austen novel, marrying off a problem child to an undesirable, aged, thrice widowed yet wealthy suitor. It will come back to bite us on our collective bottoms, I’d wager.

“Rachel Reeves may be forced to raise taxes”

Why did she/they (in the old sense) think that tinkering around with IHT and CGT would be enough to sort out the NHS; and the potholes; and…and the list goes on. My guess is  that they asked the Treasury for a list of anything not involving income tax that they could get away with lightly, although they should already have learned from the winter fuel stuff that all publicity is not good publicity.
