I’m old enough to remember with misty eyes, the days when ‘Tory rebels’ were rebelling against, and not in favour of the EU and when we thought John Major (who now seems positively Churchillian) was a weak PM. Hey ho. My glass is remaining half-full, and I was delighted to read that over two thirds of financial services companies do not have firm plans to move out of the UK and that the number of of jobs likely to go as a result has fallen to just 10,500. Santa must be working his magic.

Why did she/they (in the old sense) think that tinkering around with IHT and CGT would be enough to sort out the NHS; and the potholes; and…and the list goes on. My guess is  that they asked the Treasury for a list of anything not involving income tax that they could get away with lightly, although they should already have learned from the winter fuel stuff that all publicity is not good publicity.
