An independent (financial adviser’s) view

Many pretty-comfortable retired clients (the Boomers) worry that their children (the Millennials), and particularly their grandchildren (the Gen Zs; I know), won’t have the pensions that they do, as final salary schemes are no more; won’t get their state pensions until they’re ancient; and will have to spend what they do get on care. My glass is half-full on this one, having read ‘The One Hundred Year Life’ on hols. Its message is, don’t expect to retire. If you live a long life, you won’t be able to afford to. Find, instead, lots of different jobs you like doing, and keep working. Or win the lottery. Simples.

Why did she/they (in the old sense) think that tinkering around with IHT and CGT would be enough to sort out the NHS; and the potholes; and…and the list goes on. My guess is  that they asked the Treasury for a list of anything not involving income tax that they could get away with lightly, although they should already have learned from the winter fuel stuff that all publicity is not good publicity.
