An independent (financial adviser’s) view

Yet another survey confirming the bleeding’ obvious? Why is it that the majority of those seeking financial advice or using an adviser are partnered and/or over 50? Well, they’re more likely to have need of our services and, perhaps, to have finances about which they need advice. As singletons, they may, perhaps have had reason to contact us, but it often takes the prompting of another or a life event to make that happen. And, of course, at 50 we suddenly realise those pensions we may or may not have accumulated are close to paying out, and that those letters from pension companies may as well be written in Mandarin (other difficult languages are available) and so we need a translator of some kind. Doing something sooner rather than later might have been a better idea. But you could say that about a lot of things; and we’re generally easier to see than your average GP…

Why did she/they (in the old sense) think that tinkering around with IHT and CGT would be enough to sort out the NHS; and the potholes; and…and the list goes on. My guess is  that they asked the Treasury for a list of anything not involving income tax that they could get away with lightly, although they should already have learned from the winter fuel stuff that all publicity is not good publicity.
