An independent (financial adviser’s) view

Visiting an actual, non-virtual bank branch has become an ordeal, like calling BT or Vodafone, for which one has to steel oneself. I found no improvement this week. Two cashiers working, others chatting out back and two ladies with iPads walking up and down the queue asking how they could help. Answer, by getting behind a cashiers desk and giving me some euros! Needless to say, they lacked a sense of irony. I don’t remember that, when they had managers who had a vague idea of how to organise things, they needed signs warning customers not to attack the staff, nor to worry about the mental health of either…

Why did she/they (in the old sense) think that tinkering around with IHT and CGT would be enough to sort out the NHS; and the potholes; and…and the list goes on. My guess is  that they asked the Treasury for a list of anything not involving income tax that they could get away with lightly, although they should already have learned from the winter fuel stuff that all publicity is not good publicity.
