I remember various ‘uncles’ (real or otherwise, everyone was ‘uncle’ then) of my parents’ generation who hated their jobs and spent years counting down to the day they could claim the gold-plated pension which made the misery worthwhile. One didn’t make it to retirement; another had just five toil-free years. Those comfortable pensions are disappearing with their recipients, but maybe that’s not the reason that so many are delaying retirement. Is it such a bad thing that staying in one job with one employer is a thing of the past? I doubt it’s something the next generation consider, even if they had the choice. And perhaps their lives will be all the richer for it.

I remember sometime in the 90’s, attending a presentation by a successful adviser providing helpful hints to an audience of wannabes, young and old.
