An overheard conversation waiting for takeaway coffee this morning. The speaker, large, male, 70-something with small dog: “Do you know, 100,000 died on the first day of the Somme, 80,000 have died of Covid in a year and they tell us it’s a disaster. Like livin’ in a police state, this is. And a doctor told a mate of mine that more are gettin’ ill from the vaccine than the virus, so I’m not goin’ near it…’ If he’d moved on to Brexit (which he probably would have done), I’d have had to intervene. As it was, I stayed a True Brit,  tightened my mask and quietly despaired. No wonder we’re in such a mess.

“Rachel Reeves may be forced to raise taxes”

Why did she/they (in the old sense) think that tinkering around with IHT and CGT would be enough to sort out the NHS; and the potholes; and…and the list goes on. My guess is  that they asked the Treasury for a list of anything not involving income tax that they could get away with lightly, although they should already have learned from the winter fuel stuff that all publicity is not good publicity.
