Why did she/they (in the old sense) think that tinkering around with IHT and CGT would be enough to sort out the NHS; and the potholes; and…and the list goes on. My guess is  that they asked the Treasury for a list of anything not involving income tax that they could get away with lightly, although they should already have learned from the winter fuel stuff that all publicity is not good publicity. Sorry, but 1p or 2p will have to go on income tax, they have the majority to do it and the outcry will be no worse than the combined grief they’ve had, and will continue to get from farmers and pensioners. Enough politicking, I can hear my critics in certain corners shout. Not politicking, I’d say, but a plea for stability and the chance for the many who have planned their and their family’s financial future to continue to do so with some certainty. And the hope that, should you have to go to A&E, you might be sorted in under 12 hours. And be able to see an actual GP within the month. And be able to drive without weaving on most ‘A’ roads.
