Haven’t we come a long way? It’s surely not so long ago, in the days when a mink coat and 20 Dunhill (kids etc.) were the mark of a real lady, that you’d have been in trouble for trying to pass off fake fur as the real thing.  Now it’s real fur that’s  masquerading as fake and soon we’ll have to disguise fillet steak as quorn, coal fires as nuclear reactors and soft Brexits as a hard. That’s progress for you.

Why did she/they (in the old sense) think that tinkering around with IHT and CGT would be enough to sort out the NHS; and the potholes; and…and the list goes on. My guess is  that they asked the Treasury for a list of anything not involving income tax that they could get away with lightly, although they should already have learned from the winter fuel stuff that all publicity is not good publicity.
