Assuming (and it’s a big assume) that there’s no second wave or further spike, the story will quickly move on to ‘how are we going to pay for it all’. Here’s the first part of the answer. They’ll do their best to reclaim what they reckon shouldn’t have been claimed from the furlough/grant/rebate/loan schemes. For some companies, that would be a proper comeuppance. ‘Phone ins and the internet are full of stories of the unscrupulous, claiming workers wages from the government and then telling them to work if they still want a job when it’s all over. But there will be many innocents, and you have to hope that HMRC don’t go for the low-hanging fruit and let the biger boys with lots of lawyers get away with it.
