For forty years or more, motor racing and F1 was my thing. I’d watch every race, go to Silverstone (and not just for Grand Prix) and follow every twist and turn. Then a few years ago it started to go eco, the new cars sounded like hairdryers rather than roaring monsters, and I kind of lost interest. Now, for me both F1 and guys driving around in Porsches and Lambos now seem like throwbacks to the days when smoking (which used to pay for it all, I remember the Rothmans Girls handing out free fags at races) was cool. Maybe someone in Rome was writing the same thing about chariot races a couple of thousand years ago; but I think greener generations to come will find other things to race.
“Rachel Reeves may be forced to raise taxes”
Why did she/they (in the old sense) think that tinkering around with IHT and CGT would be enough to sort out the NHS; and the potholes; and…and the list goes on. My guess is that they asked the Treasury for a list of anything not involving income tax that they could get away with lightly, although they should already have learned from the winter fuel stuff that all publicity is not good publicity.
