While I was on hols there, I read up on Turkish politics. Their President Erdogan started as mayor of Istanbul, became PM, then changed their system a couple of years ago from parliamentary democracy to executive presidency, with help from a far-right party; so he can now get on with stuff without annoying MPs getting in the way. When the opposition won a key election in March, he demanded a rerun and lost second time around by an even bigger margin. All very interesting.
“Rachel Reeves may be forced to raise taxes”
Why did she/they (in the old sense) think that tinkering around with IHT and CGT would be enough to sort out the NHS; and the potholes; and…and the list goes on. My guess is that they asked the Treasury for a list of anything not involving income tax that they could get away with lightly, although they should already have learned from the winter fuel stuff that all publicity is not good publicity.
