As advisers we tend to focus on markets as a whole, especially in this age of passive investing, using the huge range of now very sophisticated ‘tracker’ funds which have hugely reduced the cost of investment management without, it seems, affecting performance. Many, therefore, often pay less attention to what’s going on ‘under the bonnet’ and so a review of last year’s FTSE share price winners and losers makes fascinating reading. The value of ICA, British Airways in old money, almost doubled last year; great if you bought shares a year ago, but still 30% below its pre-COVID peak. Next biggest-riser was Natwest, with Barclays not far behind, profits soaring on the back of interest rate rises and the government selling its NW holdings. At the losers end, JD Sports (Toon readers will not be sorry), other formerly-reliable earners such as Croda and Spirax and a couple of big fin servs names, Schroders and the Pru.
